Decadent Caramel Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookie

Imagine sinking your teeth into a thick, gooey Deep Dish Chocolate Chip Cookie, bursting with melted caramel and a hint of sea salt. It’s not just delicious—it’s a decadent treat that’s surprisingly simple to make.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) of butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons real maple syrup
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chocolate chunks (feel free to chop up your favorite chocolate bar)
  • 1/2 cup milk chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup caramel pieces
  • 3 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
  • Coarse sea salt, to taste

Instructions:

  1. Start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Soften 8 tablespoons of butter by microwaving it for about 30 seconds or until it’s partially melted. Do the same with the remaining butter, but just for 10 seconds.
  3. Using an electric mixer, cream the softened butter and sugars until well combined. Add the vanilla and maple syrup, mixing until smooth.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, ensuring they are fully incorporated.
  5. Gradually add the flour, baking soda, and salt to the mixture. It’s easier to manage if you add the flour in batches. You’re aiming for a smooth, dry dough that doesn’t stick to your hands—add a bit more flour if necessary.
  6. Fold in the chocolate chunks and chips.
  7. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the caramel pieces with the heavy cream and heat for 2 minutes. Stir until you have a smooth caramel sauce.
  8. Line a 9-inch or larger cast iron skillet with parchment paper. Press half of your cookie dough evenly into the skillet. Pour the melted caramel over the top and smooth it out. Then, layer on the remaining dough.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15-25 minutes. If you prefer a gooier center, stick to the shorter baking time.
  10. Once done, sprinkle the top with coarse sea salt and let the cookie cool in the skillet for at least an hour to help it set properly.
